Digitizing the old: DP discovers Artificial Intelligence, but not yet how to

By Muriel

The Democratic Party has discovered the future. It's called Artificial Intelligence. In a few months we've heard about AI, algorithms, blockchain, digital platforms, and data analytics. We even saw Skanderbeg virtually resurrected to speak to Democrats from the screen.

Now Sali Berisha presents technology as one of the instruments of the party's "renewal". And this is where the paradox begins. Because a party does not become modern by modernizing its vocabulary.

You can install the best platform, build databases, use algorithms, and give each branch a dashboard. But if the way of thinking and decision-making remains the same as thirty years ago, you haven't modernized the party. You've simply digitized the old.

This is also the great paradox of the DP today. The very diagnosis that the leadership makes of its organization is severe: fragmented communication, structures that do not function properly, responsibilities that get lost along the way, decisions that are not always translated into action. But for such problems, Artificial Intelligence is probably the last thing you need.

If a branch doesn't work, the algorithm doesn't make it work. If decisions aren't implemented, AI doesn't produce authority. If young people don't see the DP as their place, an app won't get them there. And if political power continues to revolve around the same figures, technology can change the facade, but not the building.

The server could be from 2026. The political operating system could remain from 1996.

And here the debate gets more serious. Because AI is not magic. Even the “algorithm” is not a mysterious creature that solves problems just by mentioning its name. In the real world, the questions are much more prosaic: What problem is it solving? With what data? Who is controlling it? What decisions are left to the machine and what to the human? Who is responsible when the system makes a mistake?

In fact, the more seriously you get to know Artificial Intelligence, the less magical it seems. In the political rhetoric of the DP, on the contrary, AI risks becoming one of those words that sound so modern that they no longer need explanation. AI. Algorithm. Blockchain. Platform. The words are from 2026. The question is whether it is also politics.

To be fair, the DP has people within it who seem to know this world much better. The Department of Innovation and Artificial Intelligence has talked about data analysis, identifying anomalies in public spending, the limitations of AI and the risk of manipulation. These are serious issues and concrete uses of the technology.

The problem begins when this technical language rises to the political level and turns into a much simpler equation: AI = modernization = renewal = victory.

No. Technology can make a party more efficient, but it can't give it new ideas. It can analyze thousands of pieces of data, but it can't produce trust. It can predict behavior, but it can't create leadership. It can help a party organize, but it can't renew it in place of people.

That's why the debate about the age of the DP leaders is, in the end, the wrong debate. It doesn't matter if a politician is 40, 60 or 80 years old. There are octogenarians who understand technology much better than 30-year-olds. The problematic age in politics is not that of the passport. It is that of the mindset.

And here the DP has a much harder test than building a digital platform. If it wants to convince Albanians that it is the party of the future, it doesn’t need to show us how many times it can use the words “AI” and “algorithm.” It needs to show that it can do what no algorithm can do for it: change itself.

Because you can take an old party to the cloud. But that doesn't mean you've taken it to the future.
