Russia has successfully tested its new 9M730 “Burevestnik” nuclear-powered missile, capable of carrying nuclear weapons, the Kremlin announced in an official statement. The news was confirmed by a top Russian general in front of President Vladimir Putin, who said that the system’s essential tests have now been completed.
According to Reuters, the Burevestnik missile — known by NATO as the SSC-X-9 Skyfall — traveled about 14,000 kilometers and stayed in the air for about 15 hours during the test. Putin, dressed in camouflage uniform, said the missile is “invincible to any current and future missile defense,” calling it an important step toward its operational deployment.
"The Burevestnik has an almost unlimited range and follows an unpredictable flight path, which makes it impossible for any defense system to stop it," Putin stressed during a meeting with Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov.
The Kremlin leader added that after the tests are completed, Russia will move on to the final stage of development, before the missile is placed in the country's strategic arsenal.
