Despite the start of talks, the virtual US Embassy in Iran on Friday urged American citizens to leave the country as soon as possible, and to prepare an exit plan that does not rely on US government assistance, citing deteriorating security conditions and widespread restrictions.
In a security alert posted on its website, the embassy said that increased security measures, road closures, public transportation disruptions and internet blockages are continuing across Iran.
"The Iranian government continues to restrict access to mobile, landline and national internet networks. Airlines continue to limit or cancel flights to and from Iran," the embassy said.
"US citizens should plan alternative means of communication and, if safe to do so, consider leaving Iran by land to Armenia or Turkey," she added.
The advisory warned that US citizens face a significant risk of interrogation, arrest or detention in Iran, recommending that they avoid demonstrations and "maintain a low profile."
It says that if evacuation is impossible, people should find a "safe place" inside their apartment or another safe building and keep a supply of "food, water, medicine and other essential items."
