The United States Armed Forces conducted another bombing in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Thursday, hitting a speedboat that, according to US authorities, was suspected of transporting narcotics. The attack killed two people, the US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) announced.
With this latest operation, the number of casualties from the US air campaign has risen to at least 128 killed, while dozens of naval vessels have been destroyed since September, when Washington began bombing ships it attributes to drug trafficking networks.
This is the second such attack this year, following a similar operation carried out on January 23, also in the Pacific. The administration of former President Donald Trump has authorized more than 30 such operations, but has so far not released evidence confirming the involvement of the seized vehicles in smuggling.
The legality of this campaign is increasingly being questioned, prompting strong criticism in the international arena and within American politics. Independent experts and United Nations representatives have described these actions as “extrajudicial executions.”
