A federal arts commission in the US has approved the project to mint a commemorative 24-karat gold coin featuring the portrait of President Donald Trump.
The project, supported by the administration, aims to honor the figure of the head of state, while the coin is expected to include the motto "In God We Trust" and the symbol "Liberty". The decision on the final dimensions will be made by the responsible institutions, while formal authorization from the Treasury Department is still required.
The initiative has caused strong political reactions, mainly from Democrats, who consider it inappropriate to place the portrait of a sitting president on a coin, linking it to undemocratic practices.
On the other hand, legal concerns have also been raised, as US law typically prohibits placing a president's image on currency until several years after his death, although there are exceptions for commemorative gold coins.
