A French soldier, who was part of the International Force stationed in southern Lebanon, has been killed. The news was confirmed by French President Emmanuel Macron, adding that evidence suggests that the Iranian-backed armed group Hezbollah was responsible for the attack.
"Three other soldiers were injured and have been evacuated," Macron said in a post on X, urging the Lebanese government to act against the suspected perpetrators.
The Lebanese government has condemned today's attack on the French battalion. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said that French UN peacekeepers were attacked in Lebanon, while calling for an urgent investigation into the incident.
The soldiers were part of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), a peacekeeping mission in the south of the country.
