According to reports based on confirmed data, the number of these senior officials reaches at least 70. Who were they and how were they killed?
On Saturday, February 28, 2026, the Islamic Republic's power structure suffered what was undoubtedly its greatest shock. Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, was killed along with some 40 senior military commanders in American and Israeli attacks on Tehran.
In a statement, the Israeli military said that these 40 individuals were killed "in less than a minute" during the first wave of the operation known as "Roaring Lion."
On March 20, 2026, three other senior Iranian officials – Ali-Mohammad Naeini, spokesman for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC); Esmail Ahmadi, deputy for intelligence in the Basij Organization; and Mehdi Rostami Shomastan, a senior commander in the Ministry of Intelligence – were killed in Israeli strikes.
