Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that Iran does not trust the United States and is only ready for negotiations if Washington shows real seriousness. According to him, talks to end the conflict remain suspended.
Araghchi spoke in New Delhi during a meeting of BRICS foreign ministers, also emphasizing that passage through the Strait of Hormuz is open to civilian ships, but not to those involved in the war with Tehran, which must coordinate with the Iranian navy.
He added that the situation remains complicated, with Iran restricting maritime movement in the strategic area that plays a key role in global oil and gas supplies. He said the country is trying to maintain the ceasefire to give space for diplomacy, but is also prepared to escalate if necessary.
Negotiations between the United States and Iran have been brokered by Pakistan but have stalled after both sides rejected recent proposals. Araghchi said that conflicting messages from the US have raised doubts about the real intentions of the process.
On the other hand, President Donald Trump declared that his patience with Iran is running out and supported Chinese leader Xi Jinping's stance on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, further increasing diplomatic tensions between the parties.
