Iranian human rights activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi has been sentenced to six years in prison by an Iranian court, according to statements from her lawyer.
Lawyer Mostafa Nili announced that Mohammadi was found guilty of charges of “gathering and collaborating to commit criminal acts,” charges that Iranian authorities often use against political activists and human rights defenders. In addition to the prison sentence, she was also banned from traveling outside Iran for a period of two years.
According to the court ruling, Mohammadi has also been sentenced to an additional year and a half in prison for charges related to "protests and propaganda against the system," as well as two years of administrative exile in the southeastern province of South Khorasan, where she will have to remain after completing her main sentence.
Narges Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her courageous fight for women's rights, against the death penalty, and for freedom of expression in Iran. She is one of the most prominent figures of civil resistance against the repressive policies of the Iranian regime.
In recent years, Mohammadi has been imprisoned several times, often in poor health conditions, for her pro-democracy activism and outspoken criticism of the authorities. International human rights organizations have consistently condemned her prosecution, calling it an attempt to silence critical voices in the country.
