Heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures are causing problems across Europe. In the Netherlands, more than 700 flights were canceled at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport in the past two days. More than 1,000 passengers had to spend the night at the airport sleeping on folding mattresses, the airport said on its website. Airport authorities predict that the wintry weather with strong winds will continue. Train traffic in the Netherlands has also been disrupted and canceled, being partially paralyzed by the snowfall.
In France, the weather has also caused traffic problems. In Paris, urban bus service was temporarily suspended throughout the city. There were also suspensions in the circulation of trams, metro and regional trains. Flights were reduced at Paris airports. Rarely in recent years has the snow layer remained so long in Paris. There were also difficulties in traffic in northern France, such as in Lille. There were obstacles on highways throughout the country, with about 1,650 kilometers in total, as reported by the newspaper Le Parisien. A total of five people have died as a result of road accidents in France.
Germany is also expected to experience turbulent weather in the coming days: After the rainfall of the last few days, a more intense snow wave is expected until Friday. The low pressure wave will then move towards Central Europe, bringing snow and ice, the German weather service (DWD) reports. Meteorologists predict an easterly storm wave in the north and east on Friday (09.01.2026). This will lead to a drop in temperatures accompanied by snowfall./DW
