An unusual and frightening event has occurred in Florida, where a small Beechcraft 55 aircraft suddenly crashed into a car on the highway, injuring the driver and causing panic among other drivers.
Authorities said the pilot reported engine trouble shortly before the crash, forcing him to attempt an emergency landing at about 5:45 p.m. Monday. The driver, a 57-year-old woman, was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. The 27-year-old pilot from Orlando and his equally young passenger from Temple Terrace escaped without injury.
Footage and photos released show the badly damaged car and the plane, which lost its wheel and front end in the crash. Witnesses to the incident described the terrifying moment: "We just saw a plane fall from the sky. It passed just a few centimetres above my car," one said.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched a full investigation into the emergency landing, while the Florida Highway Patrol is also conducting its own investigation. The incident came just hours after a similar incident in DeLand, where another small plane made an emergency landing at a road intersection, injuring two people.
