Turkish authorities arrested journalist Alican Uludag on Thursday. He is accused of insulting President Erdogan on social media.
He was arrested at his apartment in the Turkish capital, Ankara. Uludag has denied the charges, claiming his criticism was constructive and that as a court reporter, he has the right to be critical of Erdogan's government.
He was transferred to Istanbul today.
Insulting the president is considered a serious crime and the journalist can be sentenced to up to 4 years by the court.
Deutsche Welle's director general, Barbara Massing, called for his release, calling the arrest "a deliberate act of intimidation."
The group Reporters Without Borders considers Turkey one of the most repressive countries for journalists, noting that most media outlets are under government control.
According to the Turkish Journalists Syndicate, at least 14 journalists or media workers are currently in prison.
