The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, opposed easing sanctions on Russian diesel, warning that such a decision would provide Moscow with additional revenue to finance the war in Ukraine.
Kallas stressed that this is not the time for the European Union to ease economic pressure on Russia. She underlined that European countries intend to continue measures against individuals and entities that, according to the EU, support Moscow's war efforts.
"The suspension of sanctions on Russian diesel oil provides Moscow with more income to wage war. This is not the time to ease the pressure on Russia and Europe will not do so," Kallas declared.
The European foreign minister also announced that EU foreign ministers intend to adopt a new sanctions package on Monday, which she described as the largest of its kind since the start of the war.
The new measures are expected to include individuals and entities that, according to European institutions, contribute to supporting the Russian war machine.
Kallas's comments come as European countries are discussing ways to limit Russia's revenues and increase economic pressure on Moscow over its aggression against Ukraine. Her stance underscores the EU's opposition to any measure that could increase the Kremlin's financial resources for the continuation of the war.
