After a marathon of almost 12 hours, the Milan City Council approved late at night the historic decision to sell the legendary "San Siro" stadium to the city's two clubs, Inter and Milan.
The joint offer of 197 million euros was approved with 24 votes in favor and 20 against, while the decision was made possible thanks to the exit of Forza Italia councilors from the room, which reduced the quorum required for approval.
The iconic stadium, inaugurated about a century ago, will also be used for the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games. After this event, its demolition is expected to make way for a new, modern and more functional facility, which is expected to be ready for Euro 2032.
"This is just the beginning of a new page for San Siro. We have laid the foundations for the transformation of the area and to avoid uncertainties about its future," declared the deputy mayor, Anna Scavuzzo.
Now the challenge passes to the Milanese clubs, who must take concrete steps to realize the project that is expected to forever change the football landscape in Milan.
