During the anti-government protests in Novi Sad, there were again confrontations between demonstrators and police.
The gendarmerie and police operational units in Serbia forcibly dispersed demonstrators from the territory of the University of Novi Sad, as reported by the German news agency DPA, referring to the independent Serbian television N1.
According to these reports, the police used tear gas, rubber bullets and smoke grenades. According to media reports, the police intervention began after unknown persons gathered in front of the philosophy faculty building threw objects at the police. For more than a week, this faculty has become the epicenter of demonstrations, after the dean close to the government, under police protection, forced students to leave the building, which they had been blocking for nine months.
Student protests have been going on for a year
The protests were sparked by the collapse of a newly renovated roof in the square in front of the Novi Sad train station on November 1, 2024. As a result, 16 people lost their lives. Independent experts and the opposition blame the government for negligence and corruption.
Since then, protests have continued in Serbia in various forms, mainly initiated by students./DW
