The municipality of Tirana, the largest in the country, is without a leader. Erion Veliaj from Durrës prison signed an order that removed Anuela Ristan's powers to run the institution, a move that was more than just a matter of business, it seems to be a well-thought-out move on his part.
But, although 4 days have passed since this decision, Veliaj has still not signed a new order to delegate the duties of mayor for as long as he is unable to lead, because he is in detention cells and is being tried by the GJKKO on 13 criminal charges.
Is this a deliberate move before the Supreme Court reviews the mayor's appeal for the security measure? Or is it an open challenge by Veliaj to Edi Rama?
Things will likely become clearer when Veliaj selects the new name that will give him the powers of mayor, given the fact that local elections are ahead.
