The Court of Appeal sentenced Isuf Hasa to life imprisonment. He was found guilty of theft resulting in the death of Xhemal Meta, his neighbor, whom he hit with a hammer.
The murder of Xhemal Meta
The defendant Isuf Hasa and the victim Xhemal Meta have been friends for years, they knew each other since 2003 and both lived in the village of Shëngjin i Vogël, Qafmolë. The victim Xhemal Meta always carried a quantity of lek with him, a fact that was known by the defendant, who was his friend. On January 13, 2025, the defendant went to the victim's apartment to drink morning coffee together as usual, taking a hammer with him. After drinking coffee, the two left because Xhemal Meta was about to leave for Tirana. Isuf Hasa hit the victim on the head with a hammer, leaving him dead. He took the money he was carrying with him and left for Tirana. He took the money to his daughter. He also left the hammer that hit his friend in the girl's apartment. The victim was found dead in the yard of his apartment by his family, who notified the police.
Saimir Meta's testimony
Saimir Meta, the victim's son, stated that he called his father because it had snowed in the village and to ask if he was okay. His father told him that he was at home and that he was okay. He explains that he called him around 3:30 p.m. but his father did not answer. The next day, on January 13, Saimir Meta says that he called his father early in the morning, but he did not answer again. Half an hour later, his granddaughter called him and told him that she had called her grandfather and how he had answered. Saimir explained to investigators that his other brother Fatmir had left for the village, while his uncle's son had sent a neighbor to the house to see what had happened. He had told them that Xhemali was lying in the entrance of the apartment. "My brother Fatmir called me and told me that my father had passed away," Saimir Meta testified.
Telephone Wiretaps
After the serious incident, the prosecution wiretapped the suspect Isuf Hasa, his daughters, wife, two sons and the victim's nephew, as well as the headman of the village where the victims Xhemal Meta and Isuf Hasa lived.
Isuf Hasa's two daughters talk to each other about the serious incident. "Oh, I slept all night crying. I started sitting on the balcony, I was sad… I treated my father well. Oh, Dad, tell me, what should I do because I'm a little girl. I told him, enough is enough, I have my own problems. I treated him well, you talk like that, I told him to provoke him. I said: Oh, Dad, have you tried not to leave me there….was the work finished". Yes, he said, I'm sad, I can't control myself", says one of the daughters during the conversation with her sister. During the conversation, she tells her sister that her father has admitted that he committed the crime.
