The British Collins Dictionary has announced its word of the year for 2026, and the choice is a small glimpse into the obsession of the social media age: mogging.
The word is used when someone surpasses another in appearance, status, self-confidence, or performance, to the point of making the other person seem inferior. Born in the culture of gyms and online communities, it has spread among young people and is now used in quite ordinary situations.
Collins' list also includes ghost jobs, the announcement of a job that the company has no intention of filling, and carspreading, the phenomenon of cars getting bigger and bigger.
So, the year 2026 has produced a vocabulary of its own: people racing to eclipse each other, cars taking up more space, and jobs that exist only in advertising.
