Airports temporarily closed, planes diverted, passengers evacuated and fighter jets scrambled. Europe endured an unusual day of alerts on Tuesday as at least seven flights and a cruise ship received bomb threats.
The alerts affected flights to Warsaw, Rome, Sofia and Murcia in Spain. In Italy, military aircraft escorted a flight to Rome, while Modlin airport in Poland was temporarily closed. In Greece, the Crown Iris cruise ship, which was bound for Israel, was also inspected.
All planes landed safely and reported checks did not reveal any explosives. Authorities have not yet determined whether the threats were coordinated or who was behind them.
A series of messages was enough to set in motion the police, airports, and military of several countries.
