For Colin Farrell, one of Hollywood's most famous actors, the most important role in life is not played in front of the camera. It is that of father to James, his 23-year-old son, who lives with Angelman syndrome, a rare neurogenetic disorder that affects development, communication and movement.
The Irish actor has returned to the media spotlight after the release of footage from the documentary The Slightest Touch, which also features James. In one moment, Farrell hugs his son and jokes with him, showing the close relationship they have built.
Farrell has repeatedly spoken out about the challenges faced by families of people with disabilities, especially as children reach adulthood and institutional support begins to wane.
In 2024, the actor founded the Colin Farrell Foundation, an organization that aims to support adults with intellectual disabilities and their families.
He has emphasized that he wants the world to treat James with kindness and respect, a request that goes beyond his own family's personal history.
The documentary The Slightest Touch, directed by Rachel Fleit, also follows Farrell's relationship with his friend Emma Fogarty, who lives with epidermolysis bullosa, a rare condition that causes the skin to become extremely fragile.
To support Emma and raise awareness for the condition, Farrell ran the Dublin Marathon with her. The documentary premiered at the London Film Festival on October 12 and is set to be released more widely in November.
For the actor, fame can bring awards, millions of dollars and the attention of the world. But his most personal request remains much simpler: for his son to live in a society that respects him.
