The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, has strongly condemned what German authorities have described as an attempted drone attack on Leipzig Airport, reaffirming the European Union's solidarity with Germany.
"We condemn in the strongest possible terms Russia's attempted drone attack on Leipzig Airport," Costa wrote on the social network X.
He demanded that Russia stop the war against Ukraine, arguing that Moscow should not escalate the situation through further destabilizing actions.
Costa stressed that the European Union remains "strong and united" and that support for Ukraine is unwavering.
"The EU stands in full solidarity with Germany," he declared, adding that Brussels will cooperate with Berlin and other member states to increase pressure on Moscow until Russia shows willingness to change course.
Costa's reaction comes after the German government accused Russia of involvement in the Aug. 4 incident, when a drone equipped with explosives was found near a Ukrainian plane at Leipzig airport and deactivated by authorities. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said investigations and intelligence linked the case to Russian hybrid operations in Europe.
Berlin has meanwhile warned of new measures against Moscow, including sanctions and strengthened controls, while Russia has rejected the German accusations.
