A spectacular theft, worthy of a movie script, has rocked the Louvre Museum in Paris, causing a colossal loss to French cultural heritage. The rare jewels of Napoleon and the Empress, looted from the gallery, have an incredible value of 88 million euros. According to French authorities, these objects have not only material value, but also great historical and symbolic importance. Prosecutor Laura Beccuau stated that “the value of the stolen objects goes far beyond the price of the precious metals – they represent an important part of French cultural identity and imperial heritage.”
As part of an international investigation, Spanish police have arrested a Chinese woman in Barcelona, suspected of being one of the main participants in the robbery. She has now been handed over to French authorities, while investigations are continuing to uncover the full network behind this sophisticated operation.
According to French media sources, the suspect is also linked to another similar incident – a robbery at the Natural History Museum, where gold nuggets worth 1.5 million euros were stolen in September last year. This raises suspicions about the existence of an international group specializing in the theft of objects of art and historical value.
The theft at the Louvre was discovered by chance by a cleaning company employee who, while on duty, found the mineralogical gallery in a chaotic state. Preliminary investigations revealed that the thieves had entered the Geology and Mineralogy section by taking advantage of a fatal weakness in the security system: the alarm had been deactivated for several weeks due to a cyberattack.
The Natural History and Mineralogy Gallery had been closed to the public for several days, allowing the robbers to operate unnoticed. Art and security experts have called the incident a “cultural catastrophe” and a “wake-up call” for the need to increase security in European museum institutions.
French authorities are working with Interpol and other law enforcement agencies to find the rest of the group and recover the stolen objects, which are considered invaluable to world heritage.
