The President of the United States of America has further increased the pressure on NATO regarding Greenland, through a letter to the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre. According to Norwegian media, the American president has again demanded that Greenland be transferred to the United States, arguing that Denmark is unable to defend the territory from threats from Russia and China.
In his letter, the president emphasizes that he has done more for NATO than any other since its founding and that now, in his opinion, the Alliance must act in the interests of the United States. He also linked the request for Greenland to the fact that he was not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, which he has repeatedly stated that he deserves.
"Since your country has decided not to award me the Nobel Peace Prize, I no longer feel compelled to think only about peace, although that will always remain paramount, but I can now also think about what is good and right for the United States of America," the president is quoted as having written in the letter.
For his part, the Norwegian Prime Minister stated that he had made it clear to the American president that the Norwegian government does not decide on the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, as this decision is made by an independent committee.
The US president has also questioned Denmark's claim to Greenland, stating that it considers the territory its own only because of an early historical landing, without written documents of ownership. He stressed that, in his opinion, global security cannot be guaranteed without full American control over Greenland.
According to media sources, the letter was written by the president himself and then distributed by the National Security Council staff to several European ambassadors in Washington. Its authenticity was confirmed by the Norwegian prime minister, while the letter was also published by American journalist Nick Schifrin.
