The Azerbaijani portal Caliber.az published on March 2, 2026 an article titled "Iran's IRGC may attack Mojahedin base in Albania", reporting that, amid rising tensions in the region, the possibility of an Iranian attack on the headquarters of the People's Mujahedin Organization of Iran (MEK) at Camp Ashraf-3 in Albania is being considered.
According to the article, the press service of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated on Telegram that the possible actions are related to an object that Tehran considers to be involved in "hostile activities."
Some sources, referring to recent Iranian strikes on targets in Cyprus, claim that Iran is no longer limiting itself to a specific geographic area when targeting centers affiliated with its adversaries, expanding the reach of its operational capabilities beyond the region.
What is the People's Mujahedeen Organization of Iran?
The article explains that a fortified compound in the village of Manzë, near Tirana, has become home to around 3,000 members of the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), also known as the Mujahedin-e-Khalq (MEK).
The opposition group has been based in Albania since 2013, when the Albanian government accepted its members at the request of the United States and the United Nations, after years of insecurity in Iraq.
According to the description in the article:
• The MEK was founded in 1965 as an Islamist movement with socialist leanings against Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.
• In the 1970s, it carried out armed attacks against the monarchy and attacked American interests in Iran.
• It initially supported the Islamic Revolution of 1978–1979 and Ruhollah Khomeini, but was later banned by the new regime and went into exile.
• In the 1980s, it moved to Iraq, where it operated from bases provided by the Saddam Hussein regime and undertook operations against Iran during the Iran–Iraq War.
• The US declared it a terrorist organization in 1997, but removed it from the list in 2012, stating that it had renounced violence.
• In 2002, the MEK publicly revealed the existence of an undeclared uranium enrichment facility in Iran.
• After the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003, members were gradually transferred from Iraq and eventually relocated to Albania.
As of the time of publication of the article, no official statement from the Albanian authorities regarding these allegations has been cited.
