French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that Europe is developing its own security solutions and will not be involved in operations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, describing the current framework as unclear. He stressed that a negotiated solution to the situation remains the priority.
Speaking at the 8th European Political Community Summit in Yerevan, Armenia, Macron said that European countries are taking their destiny into their own hands, through increasing defense and security spending and through strengthening joint cooperation.
According to him, European security policy has been significantly shaped since 2022, through initiatives such as the European Political Community, support for Ukraine and the cooperation of willing countries, as well as efforts related to the Strait of Hormuz.
Macron stressed that France supports the reopening of the strait, but will not participate in any military operation outside a clear international framework.
"If the US is ready to reopen Hormuz, that's very good. We've been asking for this from the beginning," he said.
Finally, the French president also underlined the importance of respecting the ceasefire in Lebanon, warning of new casualties and calling on all parties to implement their commitments.
