The war with Iran has cost the United States about $25 billion to date, according to the Pentagon's top financial official, who briefed lawmakers during a hearing on Wednesday.
Jules "Jay" Hurst, the Pentagon's chief financial officer, stated before the House Armed Services Committee that the majority of spending is related to ammunition, while significant funds are also earmarked for the maintenance and replacement of military equipment.
The total cost of the conflict has until recently been unclear to Congress and has become a political issue, at a time when President Donald Trump's request for a $1.5 trillion defense budget for fiscal year 2027 is being considered.
Reacting to the report, Representative Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the committee, said Congress had long been asking for clear figures on the cost of the operation. “I’m glad you provided this answer, because we’ve been asking for it for a long time without getting a concrete figure ,” he said.
So far, 13 members of the US armed forces have lost their lives in this war, which is currently under a fragile ceasefire.
