Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney today denied reports that he had changed or retracted statements made during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, following a phone call with US President Donald Trump.
Carney told the media that he fully stands by everything he said in Davos and that he made that clear to US authorities during the phone call. “To be absolutely clear, and I told the president, I meant what I said in Davos,” he said.
His comments come after claims by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who said in an interview that Carney had "retracted some of his comments" during the call with Trump - a claim the Canadian prime minister has strongly denied.
During their conversation, which took place on Monday, various issues were discussed, including the situation in Ukraine, Venezuela, security in the Arctic, and trade relations between the countries, including the review of the USMCA agreement between Canada, the US, and Mexico.
Carney's speech in Davos had attracted international attention as he criticized great powers for their economic influence and called on middle-class countries to act strategically in a transforming global order.
