During a visit to Australia, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed the urgent need to reach a negotiated peace that would end the war with Iran, saying she was "deeply concerned" about the ongoing conflict. Speaking alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Canberra, she said it was vital to find a solution through dialogue.
"It is of utmost importance that we reach a negotiated solution that puts an end to the hostilities we are seeing in the Middle East," von der Leyen said.
She added that several European Union countries are preparing to contribute to a mission to protect the Strait of Hormuz after the war ends.
According to her, the consequences of the conflict are being felt around the world, especially in the increase in gas and oil prices, directly affecting businesses and societies. She emphasized that this trade channel remains “critical for global energy supply lines.”
