One of the most unusual ideas in anti-cancer research comes from using bacteria that we usually associate with gut health.
Scientists have genetically modified probiotic bacteria, turning them into microscopic systems that can transport and produce therapeutic substances within the tumor.
Results published on August 19 show that the engineered bacteria managed to penetrate pancreatic tumors in experimental models and act as a kind of "drug factory" within the tumor itself.
Pancreatic cancer is particularly difficult to treat. Its tumors are surrounded by a dense microenvironment that can make it difficult for drugs to penetrate.
This is where bacteria may have an advantage. Some microorganisms are able to colonize areas of a tumor where conditions are difficult for normal cells.
Instead of the drug circulating throughout the body, the idea is for microorganisms to produce or release it exactly where it is needed.
However, this is not yet a therapy available to patients. The research is in the experimental stage and the safety of the modified bacteria needs to be carefully assessed before use in humans.
