Google parent company Alphabet Inc. has announced a massive $15 billion investment to build an artificial intelligence (AI) data center in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The project will be located in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam, joining Google's global network of AI centers in 12 countries around the world. According to the official announcement, this is Google's largest investment in an AI center outside the United States, and is expected to be completed in several phases over the next five years.
At an event in New Delhi on Tuesday, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurien said the project represents a strategic step for the company in expanding its global artificial intelligence infrastructure. “This is an investment that will strengthen our commitment to the Indian market and help increase access to advanced technologies for businesses and users,” Kurien said.
Alphabet's announcement comes as US President Donald Trump has urged American companies to focus more on domestic investment. However, India has emerged as a growing hub for data infrastructure and artificial intelligence development, thanks to low costs, widespread internet use and a rapidly expanding digital market.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said the new facility in Visakhapatnam “will bring Google’s cutting-edge technologies to businesses and users in India, accelerating innovation in artificial intelligence and driving economic growth across the country.”
Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh government has announced that the formal agreement to finalize the project will be signed within the day. State Technology Minister Nara Lokesh termed the development as “a giant step towards the digital future, innovation and increasing international recognition of Andhra Pradesh.”
According to the BBC, the project will combine advanced artificial intelligence technology and cloud services with renewable energy sources and an extensive fiber optic network. The initiative is also part of the local government's long-term strategy to develop up to 6 gigawatts of energy capacity for data centers by 2029, according to Bloomberg News.
Data centers are physical facilities that house computing and networking equipment, serving to collect, process, store, and distribute data. These structures include servers, storage systems, network equipment such as routers and firewalls, as well as the necessary power and cooling systems to ensure uninterrupted operation.
Under this project, the Andhra Pradesh government is offering subsidized land and electricity to attract international investors and consolidate the state's position as a regional technology hub.
This investment by Alphabet is expected to have a major impact on the Indian economy, creating thousands of jobs, increasing the country's technological capabilities, and positioning India as one of the world's leading hubs for artificial intelligence development.
