With the conflict in the Middle East still far from over, doubts about Iran's presence at the 2026 FIFA World Cup remain high. To put an end to this discussion, at least for the time being, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has made a surprise appearance at half-time of the friendly match between Iran and Costa Rica, which took place in Antalya, Turkey:
"Iran will be in the World Cup, that's why I'm here. I can even assure you that they will play in the USA," Infantino said.
This statement by the FIFA boss comes immediately after the Iranian Federation passed the ball to FIFA, asking Infantino for guarantees for their safety and presence at the World Cup. Despite this statement by Infantino, it remains to be seen what Iran's reaction will be.
