A new method developed by scientists could lead to the creation of new treatments for several serious diseases, including forms of cancer that have so far been difficult to treat.
The study, published in the journal Science, focuses on so-called "molecular adhesives," molecules that help cells identify and eliminate unnecessary or damaged proteins. The researchers managed to use this mechanism to destroy the KAT2A protein, which is linked to the development of some types of cancer.
In laboratory experiments, the method inhibited the proliferation of acute myeloid leukemia cells, while similar results were observed in tests with mice, where tumors created from patients' cells were used.
Scientists believe that this technology could significantly expand the possibilities for treating proteins that have so far been difficult to target by traditional drugs.
However, the discovery is still in the experimental stage and has not been tested in humans. Further studies on safety, side effects and dosage, as well as clinical trials, are needed before it can be used as a treatment.
