Starting from September 1, 2025, the European Union and Switzerland will ban the sale and use of all cosmetic products containing TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide), an ingredient widely used to quickly dry semi-permanent nail polishes under UV lamps.
The decision was made after TPO was classified as a substance hazardous to reproductive health (CMR category 1B), automatically placing it on the banned list of the European Cosmetics Regulation. From the date of entry into force, no product containing this ingredient can be marketed or used anymore, even if it was purchased earlier.
Authorities say the measure is aimed at protecting consumers. However, many beauty salons are warning of economic consequences, as they face losing thousands of euros worth of stock and facing a more limited range of colors.
Manufacturers have already started offering TPO-free alternatives, while experts advise professionals in the field to check labels (INCI) and switch to new, legally compliant products as soon as possible.
