A new wave of violence has swept Mexico after the country's most wanted drug lord, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho," was killed during a security operation to arrest him.
"El Mencho," 59, was the leader of the feared Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). He died after being seriously injured in clashes between his supporters and the military on Sunday in the city of Tapalpa, in the western state of Jalisco.
According to the Mexican Ministry of Defense, four cartel members were killed during the operation and three military personnel were wounded.
Following the death of the drug lord, violence spread as members of the CJNG blocked roads with burning vehicles. Gunmen were reported on the streets of Jalisco and other areas. About 250 roadblocks were set up nationwide during the unrest, 65 of them in Jalisco alone, according to CBS News. In the latest update, the Mexican Security Cabinet said that four roadblocks remained active in Jalisco.
Authorities announced that 25 people had been arrested, 11 for suspected participation in violent acts and 14 for robbery and burglary. About 20 bank branches were attacked and several shops were set on fire.
