Moments of anxiety were recorded on an Olympic Air flight from Rhodes to Karpathos, after the plane was forced to return to Diagoras Airport just minutes after takeoff.
According to the AEGEAN announcement, flight OA94, operated by Olympic Air with an ATR42 aircraft, had 33 passengers and 3 crew members on board. Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft displayed an alert for a possible problem in the oil system of one of the engines.
The captain immediately decided to follow safety procedures and return to Rhodes airport for a technical check. The plane landed without any problems and the passengers disembarked safely, with no reports of injuries.
Greek media reported that smoke was seen coming from the engine during the flight, while some published footage shows a visible trail of smoke behind the plane. Some local reports also speak of a momentary fire, but so far the company has not confirmed an engine fire; the official explanation remains that of a possible defect in the oil system.
Security services, including the fire department and airport structures, were activated at Diagoras Airport to await the landing of the plane. AEGEAN announced that it had sent another plane from Athens so that passengers could continue their journey to their destination as soon as possible.
