Prince Andrew has decided to step down from his royal titles and decorations, including the title of Duke of York. The decision comes after a series of scandals involving his links to Jeffrey Epstein, shady finances and alleged links to a Chinese spy.
In a statement, Prince Andrew stressed that he “denies the allegations against him”, maintaining his innocence, but still giving up the use of royal titles. While the titles technically remain in force and can only be removed by an act of Parliament, his decision gives him a way out without being forced by law.
Royal sources have confirmed that Buckingham Palace was tired of the "constant news parade" that Andrew was causing and that his affairs were overshadowing the work of the kingdom.
The decision also gives Andrew the opportunity to preserve some of his personal reputation, while the Palace points out that, although he is not an "active member" of the royal family, his actions affect its reputation.
