Lisandro Martinez is going through one of the most difficult periods since his transfer to Manchester United. A series of mistakes with consequences for the team's results, including a red card in the match against Chelsea, have put the Argentine defender at the center of criticism. According to an analysis published by "The Athletic", Martinez has been rated as the worst player in the current season in the Premier League.
The defender's problems began in a 1-1 draw with Fulham, where he scored an own goal. In the following match, also with a 1-1 result, this time against Tottenham, Martinez failed to stop Dominic Solanke, who scored with a header. The difficulties continued in the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford, where Brazilian Rayan easily beat the Argentine in a move that highlighted his defensive insecurity.
In the 5-2 win over Ipswich, Martinez was also involved in a problematic episode, as Chuba Akpom took the ball from him and scored. This time the error did not affect the final result, but added to the question marks over the defender's form.
The most difficult moment came in the match against Chelsea. Initially, he was responsible for Morgan Rogers' goal, and then he was sent off for a clash with Wesley Fofana. At that moment, Manchester United were losing 2-0.
However, The Athletic's analysis highlights that this season's problems do not erase Martinez's previous contributions. The Argentine had two very good seasons at Old Trafford, while his absence due to injury during 2025 was clearly felt in the team.
One possible explanation for the decline in form is related to physical fatigue after an intense World Cup with Argentina, where the defender was also activated in matches that went into extra time. Regardless of the reasons, Manchester United cannot afford to constantly make mistakes that cost them points. For this reason, the analysis also raises questions about Martinez's future at "Old Trafford", mentioning a transfer to Atletico Madrid as a possibility, where he could reunite with compatriot Cristian Romero.
