France celebrated Halloween with ghost costumes, political banners and 70,000 police and gendarmes on the ground. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez warned that festive costumes cannot be used to hide identities during demonstrations, risking sanctions.
Some 320,000 people protested across the country against the cost of living, school conditions and government policies. Most of the marches were peaceful, but in some cities there were clashes and tear gas.
Halloween characters were seen among the protesters, including a Marie Antoinette with a banner for croissants.
France did not ban the holiday. It simply warned that even ghosts must be identifiable to police.
